Looking back
Susan grew up in the coastal suburb of Harbord (now Freshwater). Being the daughter of the late John Coombs QC and granddaughter of Dr H.C. “Nugget” Coombs — their family are Warringah locals.
Her community spirit began as a teen in the late 1970s. For instance, Susan was one of Australia’s first female surf lifesavers. Also, the first Indigenous surf lifesaver at South Curl Curl Beach.
Between 1987 and 2013, Susan Moylan-Coombs worked in national television broadcasting and media production behind the camera. Her career includes:
- Executive Producer Indigenous Programs Unit ABC TV
- Head of Production NITV, a division of SBS
- Producing the ABC’s flagship children’s show Play School.
Later, Susan became involved in significant moments of progress for Australia’s First Peoples.
First, Paul Keating’s Redfern Park Speech. This launched the United Nations Decade for Indigenous Peoples in 1992. Here Moylan-Smith was director.
Next, fast forward to 2008. Susan Moylan-Coombs was involved in Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s National Apology to the Stolen Generations. Here Susan was the executive producer of the live broadcast.
In summary, Susan has been deeply involved in significant moments in our national story.
Toppling Abbott would be another impressive step towards an inclusive progressive Australia. Otherwise dinosaurs like Abbott have us perpetually looking backward.

Conversely, a strong independent woman like Susan will be a fresh change. Particularly after a stultifying two decades of Old Man Abbott.
