Yet he has not always seemed across the detail. On Monday, confronted by a man with multiple chronic conditions, Hockey informed him he would not be hit with the new $7 co-payment for doctor’s visits because ”you’d be on a care plan with your doctor”.

In fact, according to the AMA, the co-payment is only waived for treatment-planning consultations, not the treatments themselves.

Similarly, Hockey seemed poorly briefed on Wednesday when confronted with questions about changed arrangements for single parents and on government cuts to programs that help transition school dropouts into training courses.

”It’s like he hasn’t read his own budget” muttered one NGO head, sitting at a table along side several journalists.

A chorus of anonymous complaints about the politics of the budget is starting to find its way into the media from the government backbench. Even elements of the business community seem uneasy with the way the government has disproportionately heaped the pain on low-income earners. While praising the government for making a ”solid start” on repairing the nation’s finances, the normally dry Business Council of Australia admitted it was ”very concerned about the risk that savings are falling too heavily on some families and young people trying to find work”

Excellent article about Joe Hockey. Seems he’s as pig-headed and arrogant as Tony Abbott. Who knew? Read Joe Hockey: Man in a million or just a man with millions? for the full skinny.
